WEEKLY WRAP-UP: 7/15

7/15/2021

We Celebrate Educational Advancement through Scholarships!

The Thurmond family, Fullerton community philanthropists, established this college scholarship fund more than 20 years ago through the YWCA of Orange County to assist female students with their educational expenses. It was created to recognize and support women returning to college and more recently women majoring in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

The Thurmond Scholarship was established in 2003. To date over $145,000 has been distributed to adult reentry women, 24 years or older, attending Fullerton College or California State University.

YWCA-OC teamed up with Google and Los Alisos Middle School to create "Girl Code," an innovative program that teaches young girls about coding and computer programming by engaging them in interesting science activities both during class time and after school. The students use a coding curriculum to develop a basic working knowledge and gain basic skills in a variety of STEM fields that will motivate them to pursue careers in the technology fields.

Brian Jones, Los Alisos Middle School Teacher, advises a group of students to teach them more about STEM and Coding. He recently gave a coding assignment where the students created an animation video that focuses on human impacts on the Earth. This week we are featuring the work of Liann.
