Tech Empowerment

Girl Code

YWCA-OC teamed up with California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) students to create “Girl Code,” an after school program to keep young girls engaged in coding and computer programming.

Why name the program "Girl Code?"

Girl code is a way that young women tell each other that they have each other's backs, that they are protecting and supporting them. Today, more than ever, we need a Girl Code program because only 20% of the jobs in the tech industry are held by women. The YWCA Orange County has their backs.

Where is this pilot program?

The program will be launched at Sycamore Junior High School in the Anaheim Union High School District for a group of 25 middle school girls. YWCA-OC will be using a coding curriculum designed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. We hope that girls participating in our program will develop a basic knowledge and gain basic skills in the STEM field that will motivate them to a career in the technology field.

Every year California State University Fullerton asks public relations majors to participate in a service-learning project where they choose a non-profit organization to team up with to develop a project. The service-learning project is an opportunity for the students to practice their public relations skills in a real-world professional environment and help out an amazing non-profit organization. They are working with the YWCA to kick-start “Girl Code” and create a long lasting program that middle school girls will continue to benefit from.
