THURMOND SCHOLARSHIP
CAL STATE FULLERTON - UNDERGRADUATE WOMEN

The Thurmond family, Fullerton community philanthropists, established this college scholarship more than 20 years ago through the YWCA of Orange County to assist female students with their educational expenses. It was created to recognize and support women majoring in STEM (NSM & ECS) or women returning to college.

If a minimum of 12 units and with a 2.0 GPA or higher are completed for EACH semester for the 
Fall 2021/Spring 2022 and Fall 2022/Spring 2023
If a minimum of 6 units and with a 2.0 GPA or higher are completed for EACH semester for the 
Fall 2021/Spring 2022 and Fall 2022/Spring 2023

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

  • Women 24 years or older who are returning to college after being away from the academic world (high school or college) after a 2-year break or longer
​          OR 
  • Women 18 years or older majoring in STEM (Natural Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or Computer Science)
​
  • Underrepresented students
  • Demonstration of financial need​
  • Submission of unofficial transcripts for verification of grades and required number of units
  • One current letter of recommendation from an academic counselor, professor, or employer
  • Active Gmail account address
  • Support and participate in various ways that the YWCA OC honors scholarship awardees

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

NOTIFICATION OF SELECTED STUDENTS: Approximately mid-May 2022

DISBURSEMENTS: Two payments—half for Fall 2022 semester and half for the Spring 2023 semester

NOTE: Students must maintain the same number of units or more for all four semesters (Fall 2021 / Spring 2022 & Fall 2022 / Spring 2023) or risk having the scholarship money reduced or eliminated.

FALL DISBURSEMENT: Students must (1) submit unofficial final transcripts as proof of successful completion of the current spring academic courses, units and grades, (2) provide proof of registration and required number of units for fall semester, (3) be interviewed by Fullerton News or a similar organization, and (4) must participate in various ways that the YWCA OC honors scholarship awardees. Disbursement of funds will be awarded in early July 2022.

​SPRING DISBURSEMENT: Students must (1) provide unofficial transcripts as proof of successful completion of Fall 2022 academic courses, required number of units and grades (2) submit proof of registration for the upcoming Spring 2023 academic courses and required number of units. Disbursement of funds will be awarded after mid-January 2023.
