We Celebrate Educational Advancement through Scholarships!
The Thurmond family, Fullerton community philanthropists, established this college scholarship fund more than 20 years ago through the YWCA of Orange County to assist female students with their educational expenses. It was created to recognize and support women returning to college and more recently women majoring in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The Thurmond Scholarship was established in 2003. To date over $145,000 has been distributed to adult reentry women, 24 years or older, attending Fullerton College or California State University. Meet our 2021-2022 Thurmond Scholarship Recipients YWCA of Orange County's Youth Employment Services (YES) has JOB ALERTS that are posted daily on Instagram. May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month- a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This annual celebration came about in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter signed into law a Joint Resolution of the Congress of the United States designating the month of May for the celebration of Asian and Pacific Islanders culture and heritage.
Jenna Oelke, our YWCA OC’s Youth Employment Services Program Assistant and YES Career Advisors have teamed up with the Fullerton Collaborative’s youth-serving organizations called the “Nxt Gen Subcommittee” which meets monthly for a community roundtable to share resources and programming with one another and find ways to partner to better serve our city's youth.
YWCA-OC teamed up with Google and Los Alisos Middle School to create "Girl Code," an innovative program that teaches young girls about coding and computer programming by engaging them in interesting science activities both during class time and after school. The students use a coding curriculum to develop a basic working knowledge and gain basic skills in a variety of STEM fields that will motivate them to pursue careers in the technology fields.
Brian Jones, Los Alisos Middle School Teacher, advises a group of students to teach them more about STEM and Coding. He recently gave a coding assignment where the students created an animation video that focuses on human impacts on the Earth. This week we are featuring the work of Liann. In honor of Women's History Month, this week we are highlighting Empowered Women who paved the way for present and future women trailblazers. Read HISTORY's article to learn the amazing stories of 11 Empowered Women who changed the world.
Help us welcome our new Youth Employment Services Interns. They will be assisting at-risk youth and newly displaced workers through our employment services. The services will be provided by phone and virtual conferencing.
In honor of BLACK HERSTORY MONTH we are highlighting impactful Black women, representing a wide range of industries, who work tirelessly to eliminate racism, empower women, and to forge a future where justice, just is. JOIN US IN THE CELEBRATION
